Working in agriculture requires the ability to withstand unpredictable events. To protect producers from designated perils that lead to production loss, Agriculture Financial Services (AFSC) provides a suite of perennial insurance programs.

These programs provide:

  • a production guarantee for hay crops based on average historical yields and the coverage option selected; or
  • coverage for pasture based on conditions in the area, determined by an indicator of production loss, such as precipitation. This coverage is not directly related to losses to insured fields.

Perennial crop insurance is offered as part of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership between the province and the federal government.

What’s new for 2026

Moisture Deficiency Insurance and Hay – Moisture Deficiency Endorsement: Historical precipitation normals for the Moisture Deficiency Insurance and Moisture Deficiency Endorsement programs have been updated to account for the extreme temperatures and minimum daily moisture thresholds that were introduced in recent years. This has resulted in slight adjustments to the Normal Moisture for most weather stations.

Hay Insurance: Producers with Hay Insurance that have both irrigated and dryland acres will be required to elect the same coverage level for both irrigated and dryland inputs.
